At Roswell Bookbinding we use the software program LARS (Library Automated Retrieval System), a product of Arden Lake Technology, for processing of stamping information for bindings. There are two aspects to the LARS program, LARS Library and LARS Bindery. LARS Library is available as a tool for customers wishing to maintain their own database. LARS Library provides a very easy to use program, which enables libraries to enter stamping information, generate a binding slip, and transmit digital binding records to the bindery. For customers of Roswell Bookbinding who wish to maintain their own database we provide the LARS Library software, installation, manuals, and training at no charge.

We installed LARS Bindery at Roswell Bookbinding in mid 1998. Our operators find it fast and easy to use. We have several off-site customers using LARS Library now, and the list is growing fast. If you are interested in doing your own database maintenance, you bind items on a routine basis, and you're manually updating or typing monographic binding slips, LARS will save you time and effort!

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

LARS Library requires a PC computer running Windows 3.1, 95, 98, or NT with at least 8 MB of RAM and 45 MB of hard disk space, a color monitor, a mouse, and a floppy diskette 1.44 MB drive. The LARS program requires 4 MB of hard disk space for the installation.

LARS DEMONSTRATION

If you are currently a customer of ours and you would like to see LARS we will provide you with an Install disk which will include your library database, libraries we have set up for you, and the correct arrangement of stamping slot positions based on your profile. We will install LARS and demonstrate the capabilities working with your Database. We will also provide a complete LARS Manual, which explains the capabilities of the program, and all the necessary training you'll need to begin using LARS. PERIODICAL PROCESSING using LARS

The database can be searched using several different search fields in LARS. The current title database contains the LARS binding record created the last time an item was bound, and the correct arrangement of stamping slot positions based on your current profile. The search provides that last time bound record. The operator verifies the title and cloth color and progresses quickly through the stamping information, updating the volume specific information. Any special instructions or one time notes can be added. The record is then saved to the job file and the database (in the case of periodicals), and the next title is searched. Binding slips (to go with each volume to bind) can either be printed one at a time or batch printed at the completion of the job.

MONOGRAPHIC PROCESSING using LARS

Since there is no permanent database for monographs each title is created in a LARS window. We set up the correct arrangement of stamping slot positions based on your current profile. The operator enters the title, author, and call number and includes any special instructions or one time notes. The record is then saved to the job file and the next title is searched. Binding slips (to go with each volume to bind) can either be printed one at a time or batch printed at the completion of the job.

LARS can provide a variety of reports which are beneficial in managing your commercial binding program.
